Martin Birmingham, Executive MBA Class of 2013, is chief executive officer and president of Financial Institutions, Inc. and its subsidiary Five Star Bank. Birmingham joined Financial Institutions, Inc. in 2005, where he was the executive vice president and Commercial Banking Executive, as well as the Northeast regional president of Five Star Bank. Previously, he served as president and CEO of the National Bank of Geneva; as Rochester regional market president for Bank of America Corporation; and held corporate banking roles with Fleet Financial Group's Rochester Division.

Birmingham earned his Bachelor's degree in Economics from St. Lawrence University; he was an MBA candidate in the Executive MBA program at the Simon Business School when he was appointed to the position of president and CEO. He is active in the Western New York non-profit and business communities, serving in volunteer leadership roles with St. John Fisher College, the Rochester Business Alliance, the Catholic Diocese of Rochester, AAA of Western and Central New York, and the Monroe Community College Foundation. He is the past chair of the Rochester/Monroe County Work Force Investment Board.

“As the CEO of Five Star Bank, I am deeply appreciative to Simon Business School for the critical role the Executive MBA program has played in helping me overcome professional challenges and leverage opportunities while in the program. Achieving the ultimate career goal of CEO has been exhilarating, humbling and intimidating now that I am fully responsible for leading our organization and driving results that satisfy shareholders, fulfill the associate experience and support the community. The confidence I have and will bring to this new job is grounded in the experiences and broadened perspectives that the Simon Business School provides to its students. Most importantly, Simon has armed me with a critical thought process that will allow me to deal effectively with strategic and business issues a CEO faces every day.
