In the fast-moving world of investment banking, Peter Alpern has witnessed the highs and lows of the industry. He spent ten years as a Senior Vice President at Lehman Brothers and left shortly before the 2008 financial meltdown. At Lehman, he became a specialist in creating and marketing credit derivatives.

Alpern’s first job after Simon was at Bankers Trust, which was later absorbed by his current employer, Deutsche Bank. At Deutsche, he sells prime brokerage and manages hedge fund relationships. Alpern manages accounts in Texas and the Midwest, plus large household names in New York City. Today, he specializes in handling complicated arbitrage strategies and leads Global Prime Finance's OTC clearing sales effort.

Part of what Alpern does is a direct result of changes made since the 2008 financial crisis. “In general, the financial industry is under greater scrutiny in its uses of capital,” he says. “I regularly work with my clients to establish derivative clearing facilities with central clearing parties. That’s a new requirement this year as part of stricter regulations in the industry.”

Simon Business School is where Alpern first learned to think critically about financial economics. He particularly valued classes taught by Professor Cliff Smith. “I remember in one lecture, he was talking about agency costs and aligning the interests of management with those of shareholders. It was as if a bright light went on. This big mosaic of incomprehensible information suddenly made sense.”

Alpern chose Simon for both the respect he had for the institution and for its legacy in his family. “My parents and two of my grandparents met at the University of Rochester,” he adds, “so I had great loyalty to the school as a way of honoring my family.” He’s also convinced that the Simon faculty is as good as you’ll get anywhere, especially when it comes to learning about financial economics.

Alpern was involved with the creation of Simon’s MS in Finance and MS in Management programs based in New York City. The students he meets in these programs show outstanding potential and focus.

Although he devotes most of his time to work, Alpern enjoys time with his family and avidly pursues long-distance running. “I’ve just completed my third half-marathon this year,” he says. “I used to row crew in my undergraduate days at Pittsburgh and I never got out of the fitness habit.” A lifelong Steelers fan, Alpern is a sworn protector of the “Terrible Towel” and considers himself a regional ambassador for the Steeler Nation.
